Universe of Water Particles on a Rock Hill where People Gather

teamLab, 2019, Interactive Digital Installation

A waterfall pours onto the Rock Hill where People Gather. When people stand in the falling water or touch the walls with their hands, the flow of water changes.

The waterfall is influenced by other artworks. For instance, the flow of water changes due to the crows in the work Crows are Chased and the Chasing Crows are Destined to be Chased as well, Flying Beyond Borders .
The artwork also influences other works. For example, the flow of water scatters the flowers that grow on the floor and the wall as part of Forest of Flowers and People: Lost, Immersed and Reborn. And the water in this artwork continuously flows into The Columns below, adding to the water there.

The Rock Hill where People Gather was created by reproducing the artwork in a virtual three-dimensional space. Water was then simulated to fall onto the rock hill, to depict the movement of water on the rock’s surface. The water is represented by a continuum of countless water particles, and the interaction between the particles is then calculated. Lines are drawn in the space according to the movement of the water particles. The lines are then “flattened” using what teamLab calls Ultrasubjective Space.

The artwork is eternally and continuously changing due to people’s behavior, influencing and being influenced by other works.
